Basic understandings on the concept of geometric phase, also known as Pancharatnam – Berry and its application to creation photonic liquid crystal devices thin-films photoaligned nematic crystals are presented. The significance strong azimuthal anchoring energy role birefringence in photoalignment layer for formation phase gradients shown. dependence retardation circular polarised light passing through half-wave plate angle orientation is explained details, it gives ground distribution optical devices, working light. effective refractive index introduced characterisation properties linear periodic crystal’s structure that forms profile surface. successful implementations (polarisation diffraction grating, annular q-plate, q-plate with a core) analysed terms distributions corresponding equations surfaces ensure functioning
